Nespresso Delonghi Vs Breville: Which Is The Best Machine For You?

Nespresso Delonghi vs breville

This is our comparison review on Nespresso Delonghi vs Breville.

I myself have both Breville and Delonghi Nespresso machines and after comparing the two, there are only minor differences.

When it comes to choosing your Nespresso machine, it can get pretty confusing when choosing between Delonghi and Breville machines.

I find that the Breville-made Nespresso machines tend to be slightly better than Delonghi. The reason I say this is because Breville has a better build in terms of material and overall quality.

Let’s get started with an in-depth look at what sets these brands apart.

What is Nespresso?

Nespresso is a company that produces quality premium espresso pods as well as super-automatic espresso machines. I have owned between 3-4 Nespresso machines in my life.

What makes Nespresso different from other pod machine companies like Keurig is that they aim to produce premium quality espresso drinks rather than producing a normal cup of coffee.

I think it’s a great portable machine to have in any living environment. In fact, I bring my Nespresso machine for when I go camping, so whichever Nespresso machine you decide on buying, I’m sure you’ll love it either way.

When it comes to comparing Nespresso Delonghi to Nespresso Breville, they are two coffee machine companies that partnered up with Nespresso and manufacture espresso machines that are primarily based in North America.

What is DeLonghi?

DeLonghi is an Italian coffee machine manufacturing company. I think this brand of coffee machine is an excellent choice when it comes to choosing automatic espresso machines and is undoubtedly one of the top 5 coffee machine companies.

Many coffee drinkers get confused with this. Delonghi is a bean-to-brew coffee maker company while Nespresso is a pod-based coffee making company. So, what would a Nespresso and Delonghi espresso machine be like?

When it comes to Delonghi and Nespresso partnering up, the espresso machines manufactured are pod-based machines. You’ll notice that Delonghi-based Nespresso machines usually include an integrated hot milk system and a bigger water reservoir.

What is Breville?

Breville is an Australian coffee machine manufacturing company. What stands out for Breville coffee makers is that you have more manual control over espresso shots. This includes drinks like cappuccinos, americanos, and lattes.

Breville is also well known for its articulated designed steam wands for milk steaming which are much preferred to other coffee machines. As you know, like Delonghi, Breville is also a bean-to-brew maker company but has also partnered with Nespresso.

When it comes to Breville and Nespresso partnering up, these espresso machines are also pod-based machines. Breville-Nespresso is based in the United States, Canada, New  Zealand, Hong Kong, and some of their machines are produced in China. Breville is also known for having great customer service and superb quality machines.

Nespresso Delonghi vs Breville: How Are They Different?

In my honest opinion, there really isn’t a difference between Breville and Delonghi Nespresso machines. Breville seems to have a more sleek and retro design where Delonghi-Nespresso machines have a glossy plastic finish.

Both Breville and Delonghi have their own exclusive machines: the Breville Creatista Plus and the DeLonghi Silver Lattissima Plus.

Here is a comparison between the two as these machines are the only Nespresso machines that have major differences between the two brands:

Nespresso Essenza Mini

Nespresso Essenza Mini by Delonghi

Nespresso Essenza Mini by Breville

Features

  • One-Touch Feature
  • High-Pressure Pump: 19 Bars
  • Energy Saving Mode

Pros

  • Small and compact
  • Quick heat uptime
  • Easy to clean
  • Light and portable

Cons

  • Small water reservoir
  • Can be a bit noisy
  • Requires frequent emptying

The Essenza Mini is undoubtedly the best budget Nespresso machine you can buy. It’s a very compact machine and is great for taking it camping whether you’re in a tent or caravan. It’s also a great gift idea for a friend or family member which won’t blow too much of a hole in your wallet.

Overall it’s a budget-friendly espresso machine that still makes a superb shot of espresso. I also like the fact that it is super small in which you can place the machine practically anywhere. You could probably even fit it on a bookshelf if we’re being creative.

If you’re someone who’s only for espressos or is on a tight budget then the Essenza Mini is the way to go. It’s a very compact machine which is also something to consider when counter space is minimal.

Nespresso Citiz

Nespresso Citiz by Delonghi

Nespresso Citiz by Breville

Features

  • Programmable Auto-Off Feature
  • Milk Frother Stand
  • 2 One-Touch Features
  • Small and Compact

Pros

  • Can customize 2 brew sizes
  • Automatic switch off to reduce footprint
  • Large water reservoir
  • high-pressure brewing

Cons

  • Drip tray isn’t well designed
  • Minimal features
  • Milk frother is excluded from original purchase
  • Can be a bit noisy

The Citiz is a machine that’s great for people with tight spaces. I myself have this machine and find it the perfect espresso machine for me. It doesn’t have much functionality when it comes to choosing different presets but it makes a decent cup of espresso. I also like the fact that it’s nice and compact which is perfect for small kitchen counters.

The machine can come with a milk frother which is attached to the side of the machine which is a bonus for someone who likes a bit of milk in their coffee. If you’re someone who enjoys their black coffee but wouldn’t mind having milk occasionally then the Citiz is a great buy.

If you’re someone who likes to alternate between two different espresso sizes then this is a suitable machine as most Nespresso machines come with one button.

Nespresso Vertuo

Nespresso Vertuo by Delonghi

Nespresso Vertuo by Breville

Features

  • Capsule Ejection
  • Safety Lock On Lever
  • One-Touch Feature
  • Programmable Auto-Off Feature

Pros

  • Up to 5 cup size choices
  • Large water reservoir
  • Large used capsule container
  • Great quality coffee with superb crema

Cons

  • Can be difficult to operate
  • Big in size and heavy
  • Only compatible with Vertuo pods

The Nespresso Vertuo is the original Nespresso vertuo machine that came out in 2016. It has the exact same brewing system as the Nespresso Vertuo Plus machine and is slightly cheaper. It holds more coffee capsules than both the Vertuo Plus and Vetruo Next Nespresso machine but smaller water capacity.

I think this is a great Nespresso vertuo machine as it makes a good cup of coffee and is less expensive than some of the other vertuoline machines. I highly recommend buying this machine over a Keurig vertou machine if you were comparing the two.

If you’re someone who wants the best coffee available out of a pod machine then I recommend buying the Nespresso Vertuo.

Nespresso Vertuo Next

Nespresso Vertuo Next by Delonghi

Nespresso Vertuo Next by Breville

Features

  • Centrifusion Extraction Technology
  • Programmable Auto-Off Feature
  • Self Cleaning
  • One-Touch Feature

Pros

  • Up to 5 cup size choices
  • Adjusts brewing for the type of pod
  • Coffee tastes amazing
  • Reasonably priced

Cons

  • Only compatible with Vertuo pods
  • Bigger in size compared to other models
  • Can sometimes leak
  • Very loud

If you’re looking for a vertuo machine that makes a great cup of coffee then I suggest the Vertuo Next Nespresso machine. The key feature to this vertuo machine especially is that it is much more energy efficient than other verou machines such as the Vertuo Plus

I also like the fact that this machine produces more foamy coffee than other vertuo machines. It has a more sleek design compared to the verou plus but that comes with a price. The only downside I’d say to this machine is that it can be quite noisy compared to other Nespresso machines.

If you’re someone who wants more of a premium looking vertuo machine that makes an amazing cup of coffee then I recommend buying the Vertuo Next.

Nespresso Vertuo Plus

Nespresso Vertuo Plus by Delonghi

Nespresso Vertuo Plus by Breville

Features

  • Centrifusion Extraction Technology
  • Varius Capsule Options
  • One-Touch Feature
  • Special Brewing Methods

Pros

  • Great quality coffee
  • Very quick heat uptime
  • Big water reservoir
  • Quiet brewing

Cons

  • No milk function
  • Fairly expensive
  • Only compatible with Vertuo pods
  • Less storage space with larger capsules

The Vertuo Plus is one of the sleekest and compact Nespresso machines on the market. I’d say this is one of the best machines for someone who wants to brew full cup sizes. Although you can adjust the volume of coffee for pretty much any Nespresso machine, it’s much easier to do on the Vertou Plus.

The Vertuo Plus is also convenient for someone who needs counter space as the water reservoir is able to rotate. Another great feature is that it scans capsule barcodes recognizing how the coffee should be brewed.

If you’re someone who wants a machine that easily brews a full cup of coffee, and has a reasonably big rotating water reservoir then this machine is for you.

De’Longhi Lattissima One

Features

  • Quick Startup Time
  • Descaling Alert
  • 3 Speciality Drink Options
  • Beverage Volume Customization

Pros

  • Easy to use
  • Small and compact
  • Never waste milk
  • Modern looking design

Cons

  • Small water reservoir
  • Small milk carafe
  • Small used capsule container

The Lattissima One is the base model of the Nespresso Lattissima line. The machine has a similar design to the Lattissima Touch but way more simple. This model is one of Nespresso’s newest lines and is a great machine for anyone who wants a Lattissima budget-friendly model.

The Lattissima One makes a great cup of coffee and can make up to 3 types of beverages. The key feature to this machine is its small compact size which is great for small counters. It comes with a detachable milk frother and has touch screen buttons. I also like the fact that it has ‘descaling’ and ‘cleaning’ indicators like the Lattissima Touch.

If you’re someone who wants a simple yet premium machine, then the Lattissima One is a machine to consider. It is also way more budget-friendly compared to the Lattissima Pro.

De’Longhi Lattissima Touch

Features

  • Programmable Auto-Off Feature
  • Quick Heat Up
  • Beverage Volume Programmability
  • Automatic Brewing

Pros

  • Very well built
  • Great milk froth quality
  • Really good heat control
  • Compact design

Cons

  • Can be difficult to use
  • Milk frother not easy to clean
  • Expensive
  • Sometimes drips after use

The Lattissima Touch is probably my favorite out of the Lattissima line. In fact, this is the current Nespresso machine that I used. The heat-up time is fairly quick and it has a premium compact glossy looking finish to it. The key feature of this machine is its adjustable milk frother which allows you to adjust the foam to your preference.

The buttons are also touch screen unlike most of the Nespresso machine models. It also has ‘descaling’ and ‘cleaning’ indicators which is also a plus. In terms of brew quality, I think the coffees it produced are excellent

If you’re someone who wants a premium Nespresso machine, the Lattissima Touch is a must-consider if you are not planning on spending more on the Lattissima Pro.

De’Longhi Lattissima Plus

Features

  • Adjustable Flow Stop Milk Container
  • Programmable Auto-Off Feature
  • Descaling Pipe Tool
  • Intuitive Descaling

Pros

  • Very quick heat uptime
  • Adjust foam amount on milk frother
  • Small and compact
  • Synchronized descaling alert with hardness setting

Cons

  • Pod type restriction
  • Difficult to clean drip tray and milk frother
  • Sometimes leaks after use

The Lattissima Plus is one of the most compact yet affordable premium Nespresso machines. With this model, it is ‘technically’ a less fancy Lattissima Touch as it can only make 4 specialty drinks rather than 6. The Lattissima Plus also comes with a built-in removable milk frother that has the same technology as the more premium models.

Like other Lattissima models, the Lattissima Plus also has an energy-efficient auto switch off which is a great feature. The only downside to this machine is that it definitely has a ‘cheaper’ look to it and can’t make as many specialty drinks compared to the Pro and Touch models.

If you were looking at the Nespresso Citiz and wanted a machine slightly more functional then I suggest the Lattissima Plus.

De’Longhi Lattissima Pro

Features

  • Built-in Milk Frother
  • Self Cleaning Mode
  • Built-in Touch Screen
  • 6 Speciality Drinks

Pros

  • Can make up to 6 speciality drinks
  • High programmability
  • Easy to use touch screen
  • Maintenance indicators and automatic cleaning cycles
  • Large milk carafe

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Big in size
  • Can be hard to operate at first

If you want a quick and easy operation then the pro is the way to go. The Lattissima Pro is undoubtedly the best machine out of the Lattissima Line. The key feature of this machine is its auto-clean function which many other machines do not have. The Lattissima Pro can also make up to 6 programmable beverages.

The Lattissima Pro also has a removable water spigot which is another plus side if you want to make hot water beverages like teas. This is a special feature of this machine that is not included in other machines. You should definitely consider buying if this feature is a must-have for your Nespresso machine.

If you’re someone who would like a bit more programmability, better quality coffee, and is willing to spend a little more then the Lattissima Pro is the way to go.

Nespresso Machines By Breville (Exclusively)

Breville Creatista Uno

Features

  • Built-in Steam Wand
  • 3 Milk Texture Levels
  • Stainless Steel Milk Jug Add On
  • Programmable Auto-Off Feature

Pros

  • Pump pressure better than VertuoLine Centrifusion
  • Great control with frothing pitcher
  • Can use many types of coffee capsules
  • Large water reservoir

Cons

  • Expensive
  • More manual than the Lattissima
  • Less frothed milk

The Creatista Uno is the most simple yet affordable of the Nespresso Creatista line. It can make up to 6 beverages, one including hot water for your tea. Another great feature is that it has descaling and cleaning indicators for cleaning your water and milk spout.

The only downside to this machine is that it has a plastic glossy look compared to the Creatista Pus which has a stainless steel finish. This machine actually looks nice and sleek but unfortunately it does not match the Creatista Plus.

If you’re someone who is looking for the most affordable semi-automatic espresso machine, then the Creatista Uno is the one for you. It may not have a cool touch screen interface like the Plus but it definitely does the job for when making cool latte art.

Breville Creatista Plus

Features

  • 8 Speciality Drinks
  • Built-in Touch Screen
  • Energy Saving
  • Adjustable Milk Temperature and Texture

Pros

  • Large used capsule capacity
  • High durability
  • Can use many types of coffee capsules
  • Great control with frothing pitcher
  • Intuitive touch screen

Cons

  • Low customization
  • Expensive
  • More manual than the Lattissima

If you have a skill or love for latte art then I highly recommend this espresso machine. The Creatista Plus is definitely one of the best pod-based semi-automatic espresso machines you can buy. The key feature of this machine is its authentic steam wand. This allows you to make cafe-style drinks without having to buy some big expensive commercial machine.

Since you are buying one of the most expensive Nespresso machines out of the Breville line, you should definitely consider the coffee quality. This machine makes a superb full-bodied espresso which is also a plus side of the Creatista Plus

If you’re someone who would like more of a semi-automatic espresso machine to make barista-style coffee then the Creatista Plus is a great investment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Espresso and Vertuo pods?

Vertuo pods are much larger in size compared to espresso pods. So if you want more size options when making your espresso then consider purchasing a vertuo-based machine. Espresso pods are cheaper than vertuo pods. If you want larger sized cups and want to save money, you can just adjust the volume size on an espresso machine.

Should I buy a bean-to-cup or pod-based espresso machine?

When it comes to purchasing the type of espresso machine, it’s important to consider your long-term use of the machine and what you actually want out of an espresso machine.

Bean-to-cup espresso machines are great for when it comes to making different specialty drinks such as lattes, cappuccinos, macchiatos, and more. The downside to these types of machines is that servicing can be expensive depending on how much you use it and if you clean your machine regularly. Purchasing beans may also be cheaper in the long run depending on how much you use your machine.

Pod-based machines are a great small compact machine for having minimal counter space, living in a small apartment, or when traveling. The biggest benefit to these machines is their portability. Depending on your use, pod-based machines can be cheaper in the long run as less maintenance and servicing are required. I think it’s also nice when wanting to try out different flavors of coffee as with bean machines, you would usually have to wait for the bean hopper to be empty before trying another flavor.

I would consider the 2 first before making your buying decision. If you would like to learn more about bean-to-cup super-automatic espresso machines, check out our guide and review the best super-automatic espresso machines.

Nespresso Delonghi vs Breville: The Winner

Breville made Nespresso machines to be the best overall when it comes down to Nespresso Delonghi vs Breville.

The Breville line is better when it comes to uniqueness and build as its premium line has a semi-automatic style machine with its steam wand. In terms of build quality, it also has more of a stainless steel-looking finish to their models.

The De’longhi line is better when it comes to budget-friendliness and that super-automatic espresso machine experience. Its top line is fully automatic and has a glossy plastic-looking finish to most of their models.
